Tourists praise warning system, precautions

Oahu's tourism mecca slowly returned to normal yesterday after businesses were shuttered all morning and tourists were confined to their hotel rooms. Many were not worried about the threat of a tsunami, and many praised the state's warning system that included blaring sirens that sounded even before the sun had risen.

At yesterday's interment ceremony for retired Gen. Frederick C. Weyand, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki recalled the first time he laid eyes on the larger-than-life Army chief of staff at a forward operating base in Vietnam.

Red Cross will pass the hat

Tomorrow marks the start of Red Cross Month, and the Hawaii Red Cross plans events throughout March to raise money, awareness and volunteers for the organization. On tap are a hats-off donation drive, an online auction, and a shopping fundraiser at Kahala Mall.
